This issue we look at Photography from an overview by photographer Roger Garwood of the popular and successful FotoFreo event, to zeroing in on one particular exhibition. Foto Freo has gathered strength, momentum and popularity this year as a premier event showcasing some of the world’s finest photographers as well as our own local pool of creative photographers. The concept of the event can only further inform the practices of Western Australian and visiting photographers in the future.

Part of FotoFreo is Uno Volta at Monart Studio & Gallery Dalkeith, where a group of fourteen Master Photographers has delved into uncharted territory by choosing to produce an edition of one only. The result is very much worth a visit to view the challenge taken on by participating photographers to produce one image which will never be repeated. The exhibition continues to the end of June.

We looked at Closet Circus: Works from the Horn Collection currently on show at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries from several levels - the exhibition itself, as well as two satellite exhibitions in response to the Collection show by our South West correspondent Naomie Hatherley, through to the book associated with the exhibition. Being the first time the Collection has ever been shown, the exhibition has created a great deal of dialogue.

The book associated with the exhibition includes a foreword by the late John Stringer, an introduction by artist and lecturer Stuart Elliot, and an exclusive interview with Elizabeth and Lloyd Horn by Diana Roberts. The exhibition continues at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery until 15 June. If you can’t visit, there is always the book for an insight into the Collection.

We spoke with artist Peteris Ciemitis, who has come tantalisingly close to winning the Archibald Prize after being a finalist two years running. As a Western Australian has never won the Archibald, our thoughts should be willing Peteris to win in 2009!
