Having admired the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition at Cottesloe Beach in early March, visitors and residents of Perth can enjoy two further sculpture competitions: the Castaways Sculpture Awards for recycled sculpture at Rockingham Foreshore opening the first weekend in April, and the Boardwalk Sculpture Festival at Mindarie Marina on the first weekend in May. As Curator of both I am pleased to be involved with these ground-breaking exhibitions which offer more opportunities for both established and emerging sculptors to exhibit in Perth. Having seen the entries for both, viewers can be assured of seeing some very exciting and inventive works from sculptors around the state.

Continuing on the theme of sculpture, we visited French sculptor Jean-Pierre Rives at the Gomboc Gallery foundry in Middle Swan where he was preparing to deliver his entry in Sculpture by the Sea with his 'assistant' Ron Gomboc. Jean-Pierre's enthusiasm for sculpture, and Australia, is infectious. Feted as one of the leading sculptors in Europe, Jean-Pierre is building strong associations in Australia, in particular through a blossoming friendship with Terrie and Ron Gomboc. Jean-Pierre's work is currently on show at Gomboc Gallery until the end of March.

The ever popular annual Year 12 Perspectives exhibition at the Art Gallery of WA until May presents the perfect opportunity to be visually recharged by the amazing work of the state's final year high school students from 2007, some of whom are already on their way to careers in the arts.

Finally, we looked at the recently released 'Untitled. Portraits of Australian Artists' by Melbourne-based photographer Sonia Payes, who traversed the nation and beyond in her quest for the perfect images to describe artists, their work, and their studios. The book is a stunning achievement for which we will all be visually richer.
